GameClub: Zombie Nation
In the eighties and early nineties video games were a hotbed for playground rumors and parental hysteria.Ill informed presumptions were not yet furnished with "alternative fact" status, giving way to the imaginative uncertainties that come with good old fashioned ignorance. Some were excited by the occult possibility of new gaming frontiers, while others cringed with bubbling anxiety that Nintendo might be harbingers for dangerous, weird, and generally demonic gaming experiences.
More often than not, hopes and fears were unfounded in equal measure. Technology was simply too limited to ever really fulfill anyone's nightmarish vision of childhood corruption. The worst you could usually expect was miserable, barely functioning exploitation of a well known brand, or license.
Then there's Zombie Nation: a 1990 Japanese NES title developed by KAZe. and released locally by Meldac under the title Abarenbou Tengu.
I'm led to believe the translation is something like Rampage Tengu, but it hardly matters, because when the game arrived in the United States at the dawn of 1991, the demonic tengu mask players control was replaced with the decapitated head of a samurai. As you can imagine, that necessitated a few tweaks to the plot, which apparently revolves around a sentient meteor turning citizens of the United States into zombies in the year 1999, and taking possession of a sacred sword.
The decapitated head of Namakubi hears about this ugly turn of events and floats on over to America to lay waste to the zombie nation by puking lava all over it. Or something. Who can really care about details when you're drinking in the splendor of nuclear neon red-orange skies, crumbling buildings, a giant samurai head gobbling doomed zombies, and whatever ever other horrors this game unleashes?
Zombie Nation is quite simply everything I could've hoped for when I was imagining garish, forbidden video games in 1990. It actually is one of those bizarre, awful games you heard about. Made all the more unlikely by the American version being more bizarre than Japan's!
Zombie Nation is to games as Hausu is to movies. An overstuffed fever-dream of unexpected and unfathomable creative choices -- with a malicious decapitated head!
This game takes me right back to the deli at the top of the hill in the middle of a long stretch of road I was too young to be asked to walk. To a time of dehydration, when my mind wandered and I spotted a friend, or sign, and wondered what strange and taboo games were out there. Only I'm not filled with dread, or anxiety, as my parents probably were. I'm filled with hope. Because if a game like this can exist, maybe there's a chance something weird and wonderful could happen again!

Watching her plea of "Not Guilty" was the merciless Cheetah, who leaves a pile of court guards' corpses in her wake as she stalks her ultimate prey. Emergency lockdown merely serves to cage the beast as she lies in wait!

Snatching the world's heroes from a temporarily frozen Earth; The Grandmaster drafts a team of twelve to represent him in a contest of life and death! His team must race to find segments of a golden artifact scattered to the four corners of the Earth. The Grandmaster's ultimate prize is the restoration of his immortal brother: The Collector!

The combined ranks of X-Factor and the X-Men recovered from the blast to defeat Mister Sinister, but there was nothing they could do about the mansion's destruction.
When the New Mutants return home from battling the alien Gosamyr, they're shocked to discover the school in ruins. Unaware of the battle that transpired, they scour the wreckage for survivors. When Mirage senses someone clinging to life, they jump into action to rescue them from the rubble.

With a simple choice, Al Simmons was returned to the fires of Hell when he spent the last of his powers curing former friend, Terry Fitzgerald, of malignant cancer. The decision rescued his wife from the heartbreak of losing her new husband, but damned Spawn's soul to torment in the fourth level of Hell.
Enduring torturous reflection, and the extraction of his heart, Spawn is soon whisked to the fifth level, where he's greeted with the torment of praise. The coming of such a savior was foretold in scripture, but the fifth level denizens, tinted green with envy, are divided by their faith.
A prophet walks among them, predicting a forty thousand year wait for the one true savior. He is Officer Dragon: sent to Hell by the malicious Fiend. His vision is no more true than the religion it is based on, but he must never the less prove himself by the law of an eye for an eye -- even if it costs Spawn!

Midnight in the city brings a deluge of rain and a chance for crime. The Little Moron Mob are out to make a big score -- and their target is an after hours withdrawal from the city bank!
An anonymous tip puts Plastic Man and Woozy Winks right at the scene. At the first sign of trouble they spring into action, striking like lightning to apprehend the bank robbing mob. They aren't the only men with eyes on the thieves, though!
Watching from across the street is the sinister scientist Doctor Volt! With his own designs for robbing the bank, he expedites the process by directing literal lightning at one of the Little Morons! While Plastic Man takes the rest of the mob to jail, Woozy Winks watches the corpse - forcing Volt to strike once again!

An encounter with the sound manipulating mutant called Dazzler saw Klaw absorbed and dissipated when she used his powers to attack the world devourer: Galactus. Thus began a strange cosmic journey for the formless Klaw!
When The Beyonder summoned Galactus to Battleworld for his Secret Wars: Doctor Doom was able to discover and reform Klaw from his lifeless prison within the circuitry of Galactus' ship. Resurrection was brief, however, as the mad Master of Sound became a weapon against The Beyonder -- and then host for the cosmic being when it briefly surrendered its omnipotence!
Returned to Earth with his solid sound body in tact, Klaw becomes desperate to restore his reputation within the criminal ranks, and prove himself free from madness. Finding himself in New York City, he soon comes upon Daredevil: the perfect hero to prove he's still as dangerous as ever!

Montoya found new purpose as a hired agent of The Question, travelling the globe to investigate an Intergang conspiracy, all the while unaware she was being groomed to replace the faceless hero once he succumbed to terminal lung cancer.
